It’s been a while since our last blog as we spent all of December busy fulfilling orders and all of January re-stocking and planning new products for the year ahead, keeping us away from the website. So, we thought we’d save this intriguing Firkin Gin for February, by which time you’ll all be well over the excesses of the Christmas period and ready to start exploring a whole new world of gin throughout 2018.

Made in small batches of 250 bottles, Firkin Gin, from the Gleann Mór Spirits Company, brings together the heritage of Scotch whisky with the flavour of a London Dry style gin to create one of the most unusual and interesting combinations we’ve experienced so far. The magic happens when the gin is left to rest in old American oak whisky casks for several weeks after distillation. This is when it picks up its distinctive amber colouring along with toffee, caramel, vanilla and of course oak flavours.

We detected a smoky quality to Firkin Gin followed by a strong peppery taste that really makes it stand out on the palate. The makers have christened it ‘Botanical Bourbon’ and whilst we would agree, don’t be put off if whisky isn’t your thing. Whisky isn’t a predominant taste, rather it’s the notes within whisky that enhance this premium gin. We found it matched well with the taste of our Citrus blend as the acidic notes cut through to complement the earthier tones of the gin. For a really powerful taste combination try our Spiced blend, which builds on the complex oak and toffee to create a real punch of flavour!

Gleann Mór also include a gin aged in sherry casks and (although currently out of stock) another batch using port casks amongst their range and, although we haven’t had a chance to try all of them yet, they’re worth seeking out.
