Our journey to discover Far Reaches Gin took us to Tobacco Dock in London for the gin festival that has become an annual event, but the journey that ended with the creation of this unusual and interesting spirit was a far longer one for co-founders Andrew and Emma Whiting.
The pair’s love of travel took them across Africa, Asia, Australia and South America, introducing them to fruits and botanicals such as quandong, kumquat, sarsaparilla and, perhaps the one that inspired their next move, juniper. What was left to do after spending years on the road: make gin of course!
The result is a complex and interesting drink featuring a total of 13 botanicals. Citrus is the dominant flavour, but with a twist that comes from the use of kumquat rather than the more traditional orange, lemon or lime. This sits on a base grain spirit that is distilled four times before the botanicals are added, followed by a ten-day resting period to allow the full flavour to develop.
The creators are rightly proud of the fact that Far Reaches Gin was conceived, distilled and bottled in London (a relative rarity even in today’s vibrant gin sector) using a 500-litre pot still, with the final distillate of 200 litres making it through to bottling.
This is a smooth, slightly sweet gin with a refreshing touch of bitterness and tang that, whilst a natural match for our Citrus blend, also makes a fantastic combination with our rich Tropical mix, where the exotic hibiscus and fragrant allspice really enhance the taste.
