Even before we get to the intriguing pink colour that makes Edgerton Original Pink Gin — this month’s gin of the month — really stand out on the shelf, there’s quite a story behind its creation. It all starts with Martin Edgerton Gill, or rather his father, who developed a love of the traditional pink gin (made with Angostura bitters) throughout his time in The Royal Navy during World War II.
Fast forward more than six decades and it was to this heritage that Martin turned when seeking to create a follow up to his invention of London No 1 Blue, the world’s first blue gin. This guy clearly has an eye for colour! Using his knowledge and experience of herbs, spices and of course gin making, Martin combined fifteen different botanicals to create Edgerton Original Pink Gin. Note: no Angostura in this one.
When it comes to taste you might think that pomegranate would take centre stage, but the reality is that the supporting cast of exotic flavours including damiana, almond, liquorice and nutmeg really add complexity. What hits you first is a combination of fruit and juniper, with perhaps a hint of spice, before the real highlight — an unexpected tangy, almost sour, note along with peppery heat from the spices and alcohol. Sweet orange peel, lemon peel and coriander seed keep that citrus going and the result is a complex, very refreshing drink that’ll be great served long on hot summer days, or strong if you like an extra kick of flavour: it certainly won’t get overpowered by the mixer so be bold and experiment with this one.
In terms of our botanicals, it’s actually quite tough to pick just one of our blends to match Edgerton Original Pink Gin as it can stand up to most flavours. On balance we think it works best with Rose as the subtle, floral flavours complement the citrus and tangy palate beautifully. But we also think our Citrus blend works well as it enhances the citrus whilst balancing the spice and slightly sour undertone.
